Dumbo Underpass

2019

Language of Light is a suspended installation made up of thousands of brightly colored strands of laser cut fabric, each personalized with a written note by a resident of the neighborhoods that make up Downtown Brooklyn. By engaging neighbors and integrating their contributions into the installation, Patterson proposed to create a monumental public artwork that inspires community pride and ownership.

“My suspended installations are inspired by multiplicity, and the relationship between the parts and the whole. The installations are a metaphor for community, with many ribbons transforming into one awe-inspiring piece which retains the individuality of each ribbon but coalesces into a whole full of movement, light, color, and changing form.”
